Exposure Builds Momentum After 1-1 Weekend Split

Southern Exposure remains in the hunt for a playoff spot as they split the weekend with a 1-3 loss to the Texas Tyrants and a 3-2 win over Utah Stingers, taking them to 3-5 overall.

Exposure vs. Tyrants

The Tyrants would start strong against Southern Exposure, quickly taking the first set. However, Grasso would go down in the second, allowing Southern Exposure to take care of business quickly. It wouldn’t be enough, as the rest of the lineup would step up to take the next two.

Southern Exposure would struggle with consistency across a typically balanced offense, hitting only 0.193 as a team. Exposure’s middles struggled to score, as opposite Tim Lourich and outside Lev Girshfeld were doing their best to put away 10 and 13 kills, respectively.

While defensively, the team saw a lot of success, putting up 20 combined blocks, their struggles in service reception and lack of offensive input from usually terminal middles would be the difference in the match, dropping it in a 1-3 decision.

Match Leaders

Southern Exposure

#7 Lev Girshfeld - 13 Points (13 Kills)

#8 Tim Lourich - 11 Points (10 Kills, 3 Blocks)

#16 Langston Payne - 8 Points (4 Kills, 5 Blocks)

#9 Gian Grasso - 19 Points (18 Kills, 2 Blocks)

#15 Ryan Maune - 19 Points (17 Kills, 1 Block)

#8 Storm Faagata-Tufuga - 17 Points (15 Kills, 3 Blocks, 2 Aces)

Exposure vs. Stingers

Against the Stingers, Exposure saw huge performances from their middles, including a double-double from Uchenna Ofoha, to take a hard-fought match 3-2. All five hitters succeeded as they each contributed double-digit points in the game.

Exposure’s three primary passers came up huge in the performance as a passing unit, with 96 attempts spread between Tyler Hubbard-Neil, Mike Pelletier, and libero Johnny Gomez. The three would pass 70% as a unit, helping them stay in the system most of the time.

Defensively, Ofoha and Tim Lourich would finish with 12 and 9 blocks, respectively, to limit the stinger offense to just 0.231 over the five sets. Ofoha and Lourich would also finish with 31 kills between them, while fellow middle Langston Payne would put away 10 of his own on only 19 swings. Pins Hubbard-Neil and Pelletier would contribute 12 and 8 kills, respectively, to aid in their middles’ performances.

The Stingers also saw success in the middle, with Sean Dennis going 10 for 17 and posting eight blocks of his own. However, it would be a well-balanced performance from the pins that would keep the match within reach. Jorge Mecnia would lead the way with 18 kills, while Storm Faagata-Tufuga would contribute 17 of his own. Inovel Romero had a slower night by his standards, scoring 15 on 43 swings while getting blocked 6 times. Unfortunately, the forty-four unforced errors from the Stingers would be the difference in the match, including six reception errors and twelve service errors.

In the end, the tenacity and offensive balance from Southern Exposure, as well as seven service aces to help with momentum, would be the difference in the match as Exposure took the fifth 15-13 to move to 3-5 on the season.
